Big Diehl COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

Ah, some finishes are particularly satisfying. This is one of those. All those flying geese and half square triangles….

This is the Windspinner pattern by Kim Diehl in the book Simple Whatnots III. Times 25. You can learn more about the process by searching for BIG DIEHL in the box to your right.

The colors work together mostly as I hoped, with the possible exception of a few of the larger gold pieces that stand out a bit more than I intended. Hopefully the green binding helped tone it down.

The backing was a great find! An entire bolt of ...

Big Diehl: Finally Binding from Wedding Dress Blue

With the start of school and events in my life generally, my sewing time has been significantly reduced the past few weeks. But, I did finally get the binding attached to the Big Diehl quilt last night.

I am hopeful for binding time this weekend. And a true finish soon. Remember: Quilting doesn’t really take patience, it requires persistence. If you don’t give up, you will finish.

Big Diehl ASSEMBLED! from Wedding Dress Blue

It took most of the day, but it is done. Admittedly, I would do a section and then take a break by emptying the dishwasher, watering the plants, making that phone call, and related things. I could not stand to match that many seams for that long straight.

These pictures were obviously taken indoors in not-the-greatest light, but you can get the idea.

It is 92″ square. And assembled! Going to the quilter soon. I’ll share the finish when we get there. Thank you for all your kind words and support.

Big Diehl Assembly from Wedding Dress Blue

Well, we’ve made it this far. Husband is out of town camping with our young men from church, so I have time.

Slow going, but with a little luck, and a lot of persistence, it may be a top by the end of the day.

Big Diehl from Wedding Dress Blue

I am an admirer of Kim Diehl and her designs–geometric, creative, small scale, lots of pieces.

But, sometimes I want to make a big quilt, and most of her designs are mini or small quilts. I get it. That is a lot of pieces.

But, I am making a Big Diehl. The Windspinner pattern it is based on is in the book Simple Whatnots III, which contains several others that are on my “someday” list.

Why Big Diehl? Because I plan to make the block 25 times, using the suggested border as sashing to join them. I have four ...

Promise of Spring or Serendipity from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

Either title is perfect.  This is a Kim Diehl ..... or, rather, my version of her pattern.

In the magazine that I used, it is known as "Promise of Spring" but in her book "Simple Comforts", it is known as "Serendipity Sampler".

You can read all about how this quilt differs so much from her original pattern.  Just go to the label at the bottom of this post and click onto Kim Diehl and you will be able to read about all her quilts that I have made in the years gone by.  Going and looking at all those posts, it ...

Binding Challenge and another UFO from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

The binding is done on this quilt.  It has been washed and is drying on this rack.  More on this quilt beginning of next month.  This was a monster quilt to bind; but so glad it is done!

In order to keep the momentum going for dealing with old UFO's, this little baby top was pulled.  It is not very big, so borders will be added to make it slightly bigger.  I was going to gift it to one of my great nephews, but they were gifted with two baby quilts each.  Now, it will be gifted to a ...

Sea Glass Stars from Appalachian Quilts

I don't even have to tell you how it happened or why it happened.  Yeah, I still did the laundry.  I even did all my ironing.  I didn't want there to be any guilt involved if I sat down at the sewing machine.  And there wasn't.  I took the rest of the day for myself.  No bread was baked this weekend.  Hubs will have to do without.  Sunday was a 'me' day.  I finished it.

It all started with deciding to just make a couple more of the nine patch blocks.  The washer was still going, so ...
